The 2023 Rumson St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Grand Marshal
Christopher D. Maher
The Rumson St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, celebrating its decade milestone has selected Mr. Christopher D. Maher to lead their parade for 2023. Chris is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of OceanFirst Bank N.A. having joined in 2013 as President and Chief Operating Officer. During his tenure, he has led the Bank’s significant growth, expanding to six times its size when Chris arrived. In addition, OceanFirst Foundation has made $16.5 million of grants to local non-profits during his tenure while foundation assets have also expanded dramatically. He encourages employees throughout the organization to do what they can to make a difference in the community. In 2022 alone, employees at OceanFirst volunteered over 6,000 hours to help neighbors in need in the five states the Bank operates.
Chris offers his time and talent to many non-profit organizations, including serving as a trustee and former chair of Helen Keller Services for the Blind, a trustee and current treasurer of Monmouth University, and a director and current treasurer of Hackensack Meridian Health Ambulatory Care. Chris is active within the banking industry, as a member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and as current chair of New Jersey Bankers Association.
Chris, his wife, Maria, and their five children have lived in Rumson and Little Silver.
Chris is most proud of his Irish heritage with Irish ancestors hailing from several towns in County Cork, Ireland. He has strong ties to Ireland including family and friends in Ballycotton, Clonmel, Cobh, and Loughrea. He visits Ireland often, having first traveled with his grandparents in the 1970’s.
As the 2020 recipient of the Monmouth Council Boy Scouts of America’s 47th Annual Joshua Huddy Distinguished Citizen Award, Chris was recognized for his contribution to local organizations such as Lunch Break and Monmouth University. Chris recognizes scouting as being very impactful in his life, always keeping the characteristics of the scout law handy such as being trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind and obedient. He says, “the scout rules are just as relevant in his business career as any activity he undertook in his life”. His mother said her proudest accomplishment as a parent was having three sons achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. “Leadership is not about giving orders, it is about taking responsibility for people”, Chris says. This lesson has served him well in his business career.
Chris embodies the qualities of a great scout. Described as a man of character, who understands people, has humility and excellent leadership skills, with good judgement, his insistence on high standards and high ideals; as well as loyalty are just some of the traits that describe the Rumson parades 2023 Grand Marshal. He leads by example, committed to getting employees engaged in volunteering as well as attracting the brightest and diverse talent in banking.
Chris is a progressive thinker, is instrumental in welcoming the application of new technology, and is an advocate for building relationships with clients and staff.
